10 Best Things to Do on Fripp Island

Fripp Island is a gated barrier island where the roads are quiet, the deer outnumber the cars, and the Atlantic stretches out uninterrupted for more than three full miles.

Whether you’re visiting for the first time or coming back for the tenth, this island has a way of slowing everything down while still giving you more than enough fun things to add to your itinerary.

From championship golf to tidal creek paddling, there’s plenty to fill your days. Here’s a look at the best things to do on Fripp Island to help you make the most of your trip.

1. Spend a Day on Fripp Island Beach

The beach is the reason most people come to Fripp Island, and it earns every bit of the hype. The wide, white sand stretches along the Atlantic side of the island, with multiple access points that make it easy to find your own quiet stretch regardless of where your rental is located.

The water is calm and warm compared to much of the East Coast, which makes it especially good for families with young kids. In the mornings, the beach is excellent for shelling, and you’ll often spot shorebirds working the tide line. Or, go at low tide for a peaceful stroll with an idyllic ocean view.

2. Kayak or Paddleboard Through the Tidal Creeks

Paddling through narrow channels lined with cordgrass and watching for herons, egrets, and the occasional dolphin is one of the best ways to experience the Lowcountry landscape up close.

The Paddle Shack at Fripp Island Marina rents kayaks and paddleboards and offers guided eco-tours through the island’s tidal creeks and salt marshes. The guided tours are well worth it if you’re new to the ecosystem; the naturalist guides know where to look and will explain what you’re seeing.

If you’d rather explore on your own, the creeks behind the island are easy to navigate at mid- to high tide.

3. Tee Off at Ocean Point Golf Links & Ocean Creek Golf Course

Fripp Island is home to two 18-hole championship golf courses: Ocean Point Golf Links and Ocean Creek Golf Course. Ocean Point plays along the Atlantic shoreline with ocean views on several holes, while Ocean Creek winds through the island’s maritime forest with tighter, tree-lined fairways.

Both courses are well-regarded and present distinct challenges. Ocean Point is the more scenic of the two, but Ocean Creek rewards accurate ball striking over power. If you’re staying for a few days, playing both gives you a complete picture of what the island has to offer to local and visiting golfers.

4. Cast a Line at Wardle’s Landing Pier

Wardle’s Landing is a community fishing pier on the island’s inland waterway side. The dock is a popular place for both serious anglers casting for redfish, flounder, and sheepshead and for families teaching kids to fish for the first time.

Everyone in your party over the age of 16 needs a South Carolina fishing license, but the experience of standing over calm Lowcountry water with the marsh in the background is worth the trip out here even if you don’t catch a thing.

Find out more about fishing license requirements on the official South Carolina Department of Natural Resources website.

5. Watch the Wildlife Up Close

One of the most surprising things about Fripp Island is how tame the wildlife is. White-tailed deer graze along roadsides and wander through yards with little concern for the people around them. The golf course ponds are prime spots for alligator sightings, and the island’s marshes and shoreline attract an impressive variety of shorebirds year-round.

Keep an eye out for bottlenose dolphins in the surf and tidal creeks, loggerhead sea turtles nesting on the beach in summer, and painted buntings at backyard feeders in spring. The island’s relatively undisturbed habitat makes wildlife encounters feel routine rather than remarkable.

6. Rent a Golf Cart & Explore the Island

Golf carts are the primary way people get around Fripp Island, and renting one early in your trip is one of the best decisions you can make. The island’s roads are quiet and low-speed; the scenery shifts from beachfront to deep maritime forest within a few turns, and a cart makes it easy to reach the island’s main attractions without moving your car at all.

Beyond logistics, cruising the island by cart in the late afternoon is an enjoyable activity in itself. Head toward the southern tip as the light shifts, and you’ll understand why people keep coming back year after year.

Fripp Island Golf Cart Rental is one of the island’s most reputable rental vendors, offering carts for daily, weekly, or monthly rentals to suit the length of your trip.

7. Check Out the Activity Center

The Fripp Island Resort Activity Center runs a rotating calendar of programs throughout the year, including wildlife education events, scavenger hunts, nature walks, outdoor movie nights, and holiday activities. It’s especially worth checking out if you’re visiting with kids who want something exciting to look forward to each day.

Check the resort’s activities calendar before you arrive so you can plan around any events that look interesting.

8. Go Crabbing

Crabbing at the Crabbing Dock on Fripp Island is a fun and memorable way to experience the island’s natural beauty while enjoying a classic Lowcountry activity. No license is required for crabbing, and this dedicated dock in Fripp Island Golf and Beach resort is open to everyone staying on the island.

Located at the end of Fiddler’s Ridge Road, the dock is easy to reach on foot, by bike, or by golf cart, making it a convenient, family-friendly destination. Head to the Fripp Island Golf and Beach Resort website for more information and a map of where to find the dock.

9. Take a Day Trip to Hunting Island State Park

Hunting Island State Park is a short drive from Fripp Island and worth building at least one afternoon around. The park is South Carolina’s most-visited state park and features an undeveloped beach, hiking trails through a palmetto-and-pine maritime forest, and the Hunting Island Lighthouse: a 167-step climb that rewards you with sweeping views of the coast in every direction.

Hunting Island is wilder and more dramatic than Fripp, with a partially eroding shoreline that gives it a raw, ancient feel. It pairs well with the more polished resort experience back at Fripp and nicely rounds out a trip to this corner of South Carolina. The beaches in and around Beaufort and things to do in Beaufort, SC, are also worth exploring while you’re in the area.

10. Rent a Private Beach House on Fripp Island

427 Tarpon Blvd is one of many private beach homes you can rent

One of the best ways to experience everything Fripp Island has to offer is to stay in a private beach house through Tidewatch Vacations.

Fripp Island vacation homes range from cozy marsh-view cottages to spacious oceanfront houses with large decks, full kitchens, and room for the whole group. Staying in a private rental also means you can stock your kitchen, cook fresh seafood from the marina market, and settle into the island’s slower pace without the schedule of a hotel stay.

Browse Fripp Island vacation rentals on Tidewatch Vacations to find the right fit for your group.
